2016 EICMA: DUCATI 1299 SUPERLEGGERA, A TRUE PIECE OF ART

Finally the wait is over, and as promised Ducati has unveiled his secret bike, and without a doubt you already know it from our article a week before, but what we didn’t know is the exact name, so there you have it: Ducati Superleggera.

The Ducati 1199 Panigale Super leggera was a huge success for Ducati, it was a special edition (500 unit), all the units were sold and the price of these precious Panigale super leggera in the used market were super high, but if you have some cash apart (hmmm…a lot of cash obviously) Ducati decided to recreate the same idea, an extreme superbike for the road.
What I’m I talking about? I’m here to talk about the future and not the past, and guys we are in the future with this Ducati 1299 Superleggera, if fact it is a race bike with a plate.
ALL ABOUT WEIGHT SAVING
The new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera is light weight bike thanks to the use of high end material, these material are usualy used in racing to maximize the performance, we already know that the major issue for ducati this last few year was his monocoque chassis, and guess what Ducati is not moving from his idea, instead of bringing back the iconic steel trellis frame, Ducati decided to put Carbon fiber monocoque coupled with Carbon fiber single-sided swingarm, Carbon fiber wheels with aluminium hubs, and Carbon fiber rear subframe, so the bike is totally mad from carbon fiber, not exactly the fuel tank is made from aluminum, the body work is also made from carbon fiber alongside  front mudguard, rear mudguard and exhaust heat guard.
But how this changes affect the weight, let’s check some numbers: the new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera frame is 40% (-1.7 kg / -3.7 lbs.) lighter compared to the monocoque frame on the 1299 Panigale.
The single-sided swingarm provides an 18% weight saving (-0.9 kg / -2 lbs.) compared to its aluminum counterpart on the 1299 Panigale.
The wheels of the 1299 Superleggera are lighter Compared to their forged aluminum counterparts (of course), these wheels lighten the bike by a total of 1.4 kg (3.1 lbs) and offer 26% less rolling resistance at the front and 44% less at the rear.
The dynamic of the new Ducati 1299 Superleggera is guarantee by Ohlins suspension, so the fornt is equipped with a multi-adjustable 43 mm Öhlins FL936 upside-down fork that weighs 1.35 kg (3 lbs) less than the Öhlins fork on the Panigale R, At the rear, instead, the multi-adjustable Öhlins TTX36 shock absorber has a titanium spring that shaves off another 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) compared to the steel unit fitted on the Panigale R.
To stop this beast (excuse me… beauty) we have a 330 mm Brembo discs up front, gripped by Brembo M50 monobloc calipers, with new TT29OP1 brake pads, controlled by a Brembo MCS 19.21 radial pump. At the back, instead, is a single 245 mm disc.
WHAT ABOUT THE HEART OF THE DUCATI 1299 SUPERLEGGERA
Don’t worry guys the Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera is equipped with the most powerful Superquadro ever, delivering 215 hp at 11,000 rpm and 14.9 kgm at 9,000 rpm, pretty amzing number and the engine has new internal but we decided to skip these technical details but instead we can give the weight of the new engine: the “engine core” (crankshaft, con-rods, pistons, cylinder liner, flywheel) is about 2.4 kg (5.3 lbs) lighter than its counterpart assembly on the 1299 Panigale (-21.5%), whaat!!!
All these high end material give you a huge number on the Balance: the new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera has a kerb weight of 167 kg (368.2 lb) this is the number of the EURO 4 version the US version which is not a EURO 4 compliant has a kerb weight of 165 kg (363.7 lb).
Of course the new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera is equipped with the latest and sophisticated electronics: Ducati Traction Control EVO (DTC EVO), Ducati Slide Control (DSC), Ducati Wheelie Control EVO (DWC EVO), Ducati Power Launch (DPL) (new feature for the Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera), Bosch Cornering ABS, Engine Brake Control (EBC), Ducati Data Analyser+ GPS (DDA+ GPS), i don’t need to explain any of this electronics aids because it is self-explanatory.
The story don’t end here with this new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera, you can order a Race Kit which include Complete titanium Akrapovic racing exhaust with high dual silencer, Bike cover, Front and rear paddock stand, Plate holder removal kit, Racing screen, Kickstand removal kit, Machined-from solid mirror replacement plugs.
I think I covered all the big line of this new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera, which honestly exceeded all my expectation it’s a true piece of art, and for now let put aside the price and the availability and enjoy the new Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera.
